FAQ

Chiropractic care in Canada is delivered by a trained and licensed professional that assesses, diagnoses and treats muscular, skeletal or nervous system conditions. Chiropractors deliver hands on treatments like manipulation (adjustments), mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, exercise rehabilization with the goal of easing pain, increased range of motion and preventing the development of chronic symptoms. Options for services depend on the location of complaint and are thorougly explained to the client in an initial assessment session.

There are several different approaches to chiropractic care. You may need to check directly with the chiropractor you plan to work with. While most will treat the whole body, some prefer to focus on the spine.

Dr. Micaela Dickhof will treat any moveable joint or muscle from the foot, ankle, knee, hip, spine, lower back, mid and upper back, neck, shoulder, headaches, jaw (TMJ), hand, wrist, elbow etc. in her Surrey offices.

A chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a high velocity (quick) low amplitude (low energy) force applied to a joint. It may result in a ‘pop’ or ‘crack’ sound when the joint is opened as gas bubbles leave the fluid space between a spinal segment or extremity joint.

Adjustments are typically described as quick and comfortable procedures with the goal to improve joint motion and reduce pain.

If a chiropractor sets up for an adjustment and it’s uncomfortable, they likely will not proceed.

Ideally, no! You will not have to see a chiropractor for the rest of your life.

Dr. Micaela Dickhof prefers to see patients more frequently at the beginning of a treatment plan, and reduce the visit frequency from there. Expect to be given advice for self-management between visits, stretches or strengthening exercises.

Yes!

Chiropractors are experts in spinal health and all chiropractors treat low back, midback or neck concerns.

Individuals with sciatic nerve symptoms or “sciatica” often experience back pain, leg pain, weakness in the leg or foot, tingling or numbness. A thorough assessment will occur and a treatment plan proposed based on your specific presentation.

Chiropractors and Physical Therapists have a similar scope of practice in Canada.

Physical Therapists obtain a Masters of Physical Therapy (MPT) which is a 2 year post-graduate degree. They treat any physical body symptoms through a combined approach of hands on and exercise recommendations.

Chiropractors obtain a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) which is a 4 year post-graduate degree. The main differences being, chiropractors may take and write Xray image reports, and extensively train in spinal manipulation (adjustments). They also perform manual, hands on treatments and exercise recommendations.

Often, when searching for a healthcare provider: physio versus chiro, depends more on the individual fit than the title or training background. Both professions have significant overlap.

Chiropractic care is for everyone!

Not all individuals will be eligible for chiropractic adjustments due to high medical risks such as severe osteoporosis, suspected active infection, cancer or fracture.

Anyone can be assessed, as chiropractors have extensive training in musculoskeletal diagnosis and clinical management. An honest dicussion informing individuals of their options occurs on the first visit.
